The Secret of Pixar’s Process

15 02 2012

Jay Shuster, an Art Director of Pixar, and keynote speaker at last week’s Vancouver Leaders Breakfast shared some insights on what has made Pixar’s design process into blockbuster hits. Check out some of the highlights.

  • Good ideas are everywhere. Every person in the room has a good idea at some point. Create an open atmosphere where everyone can contribute and share opinions.
  • Fail early and often. Try things one way and if they don’t work out try them another. The key is to continue trying until they work out.
  • Create a culture of collaboration. Pixar’s offices reflect the work they do. It’s a relaxed work environment with toys and games scattered about to inspire that next big hit.
  • Trust the process. Learn that perfection doesn’t happen over night and that there will be kinks along the way. Scrapping an idea, character or design and starting over doesn’t mean it’s broken, it means your fixing it—it’s all part of the process.
  • Celebrate what you do. Pixar honors and recognizes employees for their efforts and success. Acknowledge the hard work people put in your company and it will inspire them to work even harder.

The event also honored Larry Beasley who is a Distinguished Practice Professor of Planning at the University of British Columbia. For more information on all of the Leaders Breakfast events visit our website.
